the big boy hoards them
until the popcorn
is gone.
the little guy picks
each one out
spilling popcorn
everywhere.
today as the little guy
whimpered because his
candies were gone,
the big boy
reached into his bowl
and pulled one of his
prized m&ms out
and promptly
passed it to
his brother.

it is safe
to say
it’s their favorite
time of day.
they race cars,
spray water on
each other,
draw pictures on
the glass.
As I clean up dinner
each night,
I can hear
the laughter,
the hoopla,
the fun…

and my boys
are insanely
lucky
to know them.
the little guy
points to their
picture
each morning
“poppi”
“gam-ma”
he says.
the big boy is
always asking
when our next visit
will be.
each Christmas
they get a book
from them.
the last few have been
those great recordable books
from Hallmark.
the boys read them
at least
twice a week
and most weeks
it’s every day.
hearing their voices
makes the miles
seem
not quite
as far.
