it’s a sad day

today.

if you know me

at all,

you know I bleed

blue & white.

you know my kids chant

“we are”

with the best of them.

you know the big boy adores

JoePa.

so you can imagine

how we felt

when we heard the news

as we were leaving church.

the big boy cried.

the little guy has been saying

“JoePa”

“terno”

all afternoon.

my heart is

heavy.

In my four years at Main Campus I spent more hours in the Paterno Library than anywhere else. I’d find a corner on the 4th floor, settle in, and stay for hours…sometimes overnight. I wouldn’t have had that place without Joe and SuePa, and their generous giving to make the University a better place. Where learning was more important than football.

I spent two years on the sidelines during games – a huge telephoto lens, a film camera, and a monopod – capturing the action, capturing…him. I’d race to the media room after the game to score a front row seat for the press conference. I’d jot notes, shoot some images, and listen. Something about his voice, his delivery…it made you want to be better. I wasn’t a football player, he was talking about the game that just ended, but somehow those words got inside my head…inside my heart. He wanted every person who walked through the Allen Street Gates to be better than they were the day before.

Thank you Joe.

For inspiring me and hundreds of thousands of Penn Staters to be better.

To do more.

To realize we are destined for great things.

You will always be Penn State.

And I will forever be grateful.
